Ganapath Movie Review: Story/ Plot Analysis

Hero is Born unfolds in a dystopian world reminiscent of Shanghai, where the impoverished masses grapple with oppression following a devastating nuclear conflict that razed much of civilization. In the lead role, Tiger Shroff embodies Guddu, also known as Ganapath, who undergoes a profound transformation when confronted with harsh realities. This action-packed film serves as a canvas for Tiger to exhibit his extraordinary combat prowess, thrusting him into one perilous scenario after another. However, this coming-of-age narrative, essential in establishing Ganapath as a leader, lacks the weight of genuine significance and urgency.

In the Hindi film ‘Ganapath,’ Silver City is a stark representation of the deep divide between the affluent and the impoverished. Within an enigmatic and unrevealed future, a sinister antagonist known as Dalini shrouds herself in mystery, orchestrating a clandestine operation to keep the two social strata separate. A brutal fighting arena emerges as a means for both factions to vent their frustrations, setting the stage for an impending clash.

Amitabh Bachchan, lending his voice as the narrator and assuming the role of Dalapati, embarks on a quest to identify a leader who can emancipate the oppressed masses, prophesying the emergence of a potential savior. Tiger’s character, Guddu, remains oblivious to his destined role as the phoenix who will rise from the ashes.

This initial introduction to the world of ‘Ganapath’ feels rushed, lacking the necessary buildup and substance. The plight of the impoverished is presented but fails to evoke genuine empathy. The two distinct worlds, one of opulence and the other of destitution, appear disjointed, resembling eras from different time periods rather than the futuristic setting they aspire to create. Silver City’s affluent zone boasts skyscrapers, modern amenities, comfort, and vibrant colors, while the impoverished endure a life of drudgery and toil, devoid of sustenance, with their attire limited to earthy tones, echoing influences from Hollywood films such as ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and ‘Dune.’

Furthermore, the visual effects exhibit a noticeable lack of cohesion as they transition from one sequence to the next. Repetition becomes evident, with the same few establishing shots of Silver City used repeatedly to represent the affluent section, mirroring the lazy filmmaking also apparent in the depiction of the fighting arena within the prosperous society.

Ganapath Movie Review: Analysis of Star Performance

Tiger Shroff has consistently demonstrated his potential when chosen for the right projects, and in this case, the same principle applies. He excels in his role but cannot salvage a lackluster film single-handedly. His dance and combat skills shine, but as I’ve previously mentioned in my reviews of his films, we’ve reached a point of ‘saturation’ and ‘diminishing marginal utility.’ Audiences now demand more than just ‘dance and fight,’ making films like ‘War’ a better bet over something like this.

Kriti Sanon’s timing is unfortunate, especially considering her recent National Award win for ‘Mimi.’ ‘Ganapath’ reveals why she’s opted for the safe route, resorting to ‘shortcuts’ to maintain her presence. While she delivers an earnest performance, it’s overshadowed by the chaos in other aspects of the film.

What also highlights the lackadaisical approach of the filmmakers is their apparent disregard for any research and development regarding Amitabh Bachchan’s appearance, essentially mirroring his leaked look from ‘Thugs of Hindostan,’ which was actually a portrait taken by the renowned photographer Steven McCurry.

Ganapath Movie Review: Analysis of Director and Music

A narrative such as this one perpetually entices filmmakers, promising them the opportunity to bring their visions to life. Unfortunately, it appears that Vikas Bahl succumbed to the allure of thinking, “We can always make it shine during post-production.” Regrettably, they couldn’t keep that promise, resulting in Vikas’s direction resembling a chaotic computer-generated spectacle.

As for Amit Trivedi’s soundtrack, it merely occupies space. It neither exceeds nor falls short of expectations. Not a single tune stands out as essential, seemingly placed only to accommodate Tiger Shroff’s character, Guddu, who dances in various situations.

Conclusion

Ganapath movie is a highly anticipated Bollywood action film that promises to deliver thrilling performances by its charismatic lead duo, Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon. The movie’s trailer generated excitement among audiences, and it was released on October 20, 2023. The film’s plot is set in a dystopian world where Tiger Shroff’s character, Guddu, undergoes a transformation as he confronts the harsh realities of his environment. While the film offers high-octane action sequences, the storyline lacks the weight of genuine significance and urgency. The depiction of the contrasting worlds within the movie could have been more cohesive, and the visual effects fell short of expectations. Tiger Shroff shines in his role, but the film’s overall quality leaves something to be desired. Kriti Sanon’s performance, while earnest, is overshadowed by other shortcomings. Director Vikas Bahl’s promise of post-production shine remains unfulfilled, and the soundtrack by Amit Trivedi, while present, lacks standout moments. “Ganapath” may attract fans of adrenaline-pumping entertainment but falls short of reaching its full potential.
