On August 10, Life Insurance Corporation of India announced an impressive upsurge of 1,299 percent in net profit, amounting to Rs 9,543 crore, for the quarter ending on June 30, 2023. This remarkable growth can be attributed to increased income from investments. Notably, the organization had reported a net profit of Rs 682 crore during the corresponding period last year.
Furthermore, as of June 30, the gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio was recorded at 2.48 percent, in stark contrast to the 5.84 percent reported last year. Impressively, the net non-performing asset (NPA) remained at zero, mirroring the previous year’s statistic.
The revenue generated from investments witnessed a substantial rise, reaching Rs 90,309 crore in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2023-2024, compared to Rs 69,570 crore from the prior year.
During the quarter ending on June 30, 2023, the company successfully sold a total of 32,16,301 policies within the individual segment. This number marks a decline compared to the 36,81,764 policies sold in the same quarter of the preceding year. Siddhartha Mohanty, the Managing Director and CEO of LIC, attributed this reduction in policy numbers to adjustments in the ticket size model. He explained that efforts were directed towards refining the ticket size models and profitability parameters. Mohanty expressed optimism, foreseeing an increase in policy numbers in the forthcoming quarters.
Despite these fluctuations, the first-year premium, often considered an indicator of business growth, exhibited a decrease of 8.3 percent, amounting to Rs 6,810 crore, for the quarter. This figure contrasts with the Rs 7,429 crore reported during the corresponding period in the previous year. Interestingly, the net premium income remained relatively stable at Rs 98,362 crore, only slightly differing from the Rs 98,351 crore reported in the same period last year.
