Tiger Woods Undergoes Surgery Following Early Masters Exit

Tiger Woods undergoes successful surgery on his right ankle less than two weeks after withdrawing from the Masters due to a damaged leg.

According to a statement posted on Woods’ Twitter account, he underwent a subtalar fusion procedure to address his post-traumatic arthritis from his previous talus fracture.

Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan performed the surgery, which has been deemed successful. Currently, Woods is recovering and is looking forward to beginning his rehabilitation.

Mark Steinberg, Tiger Woods agent at Excel Sports, mentioned in a telephone interview with the Associated Press that Woods is resting now and will start the recovery process. However, Steinberg also said that there is no timetable on when Woods could return to playing golf. The primary goal is for Woods to recover and lead a more comfortable day-to-day life.

During the rainy third round of the Masters on Saturday, Tiger Woods was visibly struggling to walk, and play was suspended before the round was completed. He withdrew from the tournament on Sunday morning after barely making the cut.

Woods shattered multiple bones in his right leg and ankle in February 2021 when he crashed the SUV he was driving off a suburban coastal Los Angeles road at about 85 mph and tumbled down the side of a hill. The injuries were so severe that doctors contemplated amputation.

The 47-year-old, who made a comeback at the 2022 Masters, has had multiple surgeries on his leg as a result of the car crash. Recovery from subtalar fusion typically takes between eight to 12 weeks, which would all but rule out Woods’ participation in the PGA Championship next month.

The U.S. Open is June 15-18 at Los Angeles Country Club, and the British Open is July 20-23 at Royal Liverpool in England. Woods’ participation in these events remains uncertain.

In summary, Tiger Woods underwent successful surgery on his right ankle to address his post-traumatic arthritis, and he is currently recovering. While there is no timeline for his return to playing golf, the focus is on his rehabilitation and leading a more comfortable day-to-day life.
