Russell played as a centre for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1956 to 1969.

Russell was a five time NBA Most Valuable Player and a 12 time NBA All-Star. Russell is widely considered to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Russell remained active and had a presence in the league upto his age 80s.

The NBA great Bill Russell has died on July 31, 2022 at the age of 88.

In Russell 13 years of playing within the NBA, he winning 11 championship rings, which is a feat that no one else has topped since then.

The NBA announced Thursday, the life and legacy of Bill Russell will be honored by retiring his Jersey No. 6 throughout the league. He will be the first player to have his number retired across the NBA.
